Israel’s air force struck more positions in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah fired more rockets Tuesday as cross-border hostilities continued.

Monday’s strikes killed at least 492 people and wounded at least 1,600, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, making it the deadliest single day of conflict in the country since its bloody 15-year civil war, which ended in 1990.

World leaders are scrambling to cool tensions and avoid a wider war. At the same time, the Israeli military urged evacuations in areas it says are linked to Hezbollah operations, particularly a large swath of eastern Lebanon.
